A short film can be your “business card.” These days, filmmakers are reaping major benefits from having impressive short film work on their resume. Take Emily Carmichael—you may not know who she is now, but you will. Carmichael has had success with her web series, “The Adventures of Ledo and Ix,” but her future is growing brighter.
Now, she’s bypassing everyone else in the game. Her short film “Stryka” is the stepping stone to her next two major projects: penning Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, starring John Boyega, and directing Powerhouse, the new property from Steven Spielberg.

Abbie has had enough of being the outcast in her family. After a particularly brutal Thanksgiving dinner with her family, she offers an unassuming stranger, James, the proposal of a lifetime.

If you’re in or around the UK, the Leeds International Film Festival begins this Thursday in The Headrow, Leeds and there is so much good filmmaking it’ll make your head spin. Certain Women is gaining a lot of attention for stars Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams, and Laura Dern. Perhaps more importantly, there are several short film programs you simply cannot miss.
One such short program is the Dead Shorts competition, a series of humor and horror films, for those of you weening off of Halloween or still recovering from the Walking Dead season premiere (#nospoilers). Dead Shorts is one of 6 competitive short film programs throughout the week.

Octavia Butler (1947-2006) has been influencing science fiction in literature for some time, but now films are greatly benefiting from her work as well. Later this month, REDCAT presents “Let It Be Known: Short Films Inspired by Octavia E. Butler,” a short film series curated by Erin Christovale in Los Angeles.
