The French Riviera Film Festival (FRFF) showcased a host of well-regarded short films from all over the world on our itsahort.com platform, earlier this month. At the end of it all, the big winners from this emerging film festival included “Invisible Alice,” named for Best Drama, and “The Taste of Ginger,” also named Best Drama.
Actors Caroline Lagerfelt (“The Blacklist,” “Gossip Girl”) and Eric Roberts (“The Dark Knight,” “The Expendables”) were honored for Industry Excellence. Venerable actor George Chakiris (“West Side Story,” “Meet Me In Las Vegas”) received the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award.

This Lord of the Rings-inspired Short Took GeekFest
The 8th Annual GeekFest was an absolute romp. Fans spent four days watching 36 of the best sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, and fan shorts on our mighty itsashort.com platform. They got to see popular fan films like “A Blaster In The Right Hands: A Star Wars Story,” “Star Wars: Origins,” and “Living in Crime Alley.”
Yet, “The Beacons of Gondor,” a Lord of the Rings-inspired short by Scott Paterson, stood above them all as the winner of the 2021 GeekFest!
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention other GeekFest faves like “Overkill,” a short that offers a comedic take on the slasher film genre, and “The Last Resort”, a ghost story set in the old west.
And while the virtual fun is done, the GeekFest is far from over.
The traveling festival will take its show on the road and return in physical form – yes, really! –at MEGACON Orlando on August 12 from 7-9 p.m.

Why Black Widow’s Success Could Hurt Movie Theaters
The success of “Black Widow,” released simultaneously in movie theaters and on Disney+, could permanently change how studios release films, according to this Yahoo Finance report.
The Marvel blockbuster rang up $80 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend, and it earned $60 million more on Disney+, making it the most successful post-pandemic movie to date.
Black Widow’s runaway success could produce harrowing implications for movie theater chains, according to one film industry expert. Rich Greenfield of LightShed Partners told Yahoo Finance that studios could shift from releasing films as box office exclusives and opt for hybrid releases.
“[Studios] don’t need the theaters as much as they used to,” said Greenfield. Do they still want theaters? Sure. Do they make money on theaters? Absolutely…But the leverage in the relationship is shifting towards the movie studio, and they’re realizing that they can generate a lot of money directly to the consumer.”
